Toteme vs. Quince Wool Scarf Jackets, Compared

Feb 19, 2025

If you’re eyeing an investment coat for your winter lineup and spotted the beautiful scarf coat style, these two options – Toteme’s Chain Stitch Wool Blend Scarf Jacket ($1,130) and Quince’s Double-Faced Merino Wool Scarf Coat ($189.90) – are both worthy contenders. But which is right for you & your budget?

When it comes to scarf coats, the Toteme and Quince options represent two different approaches: designer craftsmanship versus affordability. After trying both, here’s how they measure up in terms of material, design, and overall wearability…

BTW, I’m 5’6″ and take a medium in coats (+ everything else). I usually like a looser fit.

Psssst.. Here’s Shana’s video comparing Toteme’s, Quince’s and Amazon’s take on the scarf style coat. It’s reeeeally helpful to see them all in action if you’re trying to decide which is for you.

Toteme’s scarf jacket is all about the details. The attached scarf trimmed with the long tassels feels substantial and well-secured, staying neatly in place thanks to the coat’s thick, almost windproof weight. The shell-stitch trim adds subtle definition to the boxier silhouette (something I’m always a fan of), while the dropped shoulders, split cuffs, and side vents contribute to its structured yet relaxed fit. Best of both worlds.

The wool-blend material (88% wool, 12% recycled polyester) is smooth and sturdy but slightly less soft than I expected. It feels more tailored than cozy – better suited for layering over polished outfits rather than casual, everyday wear. (My baggy jeans look ok with it… but I’d go a little fancier.) The heavier weight enhances its presence but might feel cumbersome for those looking for a lighter coat.

BUT – Toteme’s scarf jacket is not only a good deal warmer (thanks to that heavier wool blend), it is the coat for making an entrance. The tassel-trimmed attached scarf feels indulgently dramatic, and the contrast shell stitching is so understatedly chic it might as well whisper “I cost a fortune” haha. It’s a bit heavier, which works in its favor; the scarf stays in place without fidgeting (thank god).

While the trusty structure is there, the wool blend felt more polished than cozy. It’s the kind of coat you wear to impress, not necessarily to lounge in. But if overall warmth is what you’re going for – it works well.

The Quince coat stands out for its material. Made from 100% merino wool, it’s notably softer and more comfortable than Toteme’s blend. The double-faced fabric offers a substantial feel without being heavy, making it a great option for everyday wear, almost like a sweater-coat. However, the lighter weight means the attached scarf doesn’t stay in place quite as securely, requiring occasional adjustment. But howwww cute:

The design is simpler, with clean lines and functional patch pockets. While it lacks the more intricate details + warmth of the Toteme coat, its straightforward style feels versatile and easier to wear (if I don’t need to stay warm in freezing temps). Quince’s commitment to sustainability is a bonus, too.

The Quince coat’s fabric is just cozier & more relaxed. It’s the coat you’ll actually want to wrap yourself in on a chilly day (with a warm sweater underneath), IMO. Aaaand it’s not a bajillion dollars.

If your coat is your Statement Piece & you’re looking for warmth (“..almost windproof, and would be amazing even in freezing temps” – S), Toteme is your pick. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are simply high-fashion, making it the winner for dressing up + shutting out the cold. But if softness and everyday layering are your top priorities, Quince delivers – and for under $200.

The Toteme coat’s design elements & heavier construction give it a polished, elevated feel that stands out…. but if comfort and softness are your main concerns, the Quince coat is the better choice, even if it’s a bit lighter and more sweater-leaning. Its merino wool fabric feels luxurious at a fraction of the price.

Which would you choose?
